Design Miami/Basel 2016 has opened to the public today, and several must-sees from the collectible design fair have already begun to make waves. Among the top displays attracting crowds so far are designs by Zaha Hadid and Design at Large. Here we list some of the most popular exhibits so far.
The Zaha Hadid gallery “plays with the dichotomy between the fluidity of the Liquid Glacial Collection and the solidity of the Marble Collection for Citco as well as the Mew table for Sawaya Moroni.” (Basel 2016). Following her untimely death, the gallery is showing a number of tables and ceramics.
The ninth edition of the Designers of the Future Award tasked entrants with interpreting the theme of “betterment”, combining Swarovski crystals and new technologies. Anjali Srinivasan created an undulating wave of interactive tiles, Yuri Suzuki produced a musical instrument that makes sound by tapping crystals, and Studio Brynjar & Veronika designed crystal blinds that cast rainbows when hit by the sun.
Gallery FUMI is featured on a number of must-see lists (including Blouin and Artsy), turning heads with Lukas Wegwerth’s Crystallization collection, “that ‘repairs’ broken vases with growing salt crystals”.
Design at Large, curated by founder and editor in chief of Cabana Magazine Martina Mondadori Sartogo, focuses on the theme of landscape. A particular highlight is the ZaZen Stone Tea House by Masatoshi Izumi & Koichi Hara.
